This restaurant and bar offers an inviting ambiance that’s both cozy and lively, perfect for anything from casual meals to celebratory nights out.
Butterjoint’s cuisine is a delightful tour of elevated pub fare, with an emphasis on expertly crafted burgers, hearty sandwiches, and sumptuous shareable plates. Their signature Butterjoint Burger features an 8oz beef patty crowned with melted cheddar, a special Butterjoint sauce, crisp lettuce, and tangy sour dill pickles—each bite juicy and rich with balanced smoky flavor. For a more indulgent experience, the Fancy Burger doubles down with two smashed beef patties, gruyere cheese, smoky bacon, and a punchy hatch chile aioli, delivering a bold flavor profile that’s difficult to forget.
Vegetarian diners will appreciate the Fancy Veggie Burger—an artful quinoa, freekeh, and black bean patty paired with pear BBQ and whipped goat cheese, offering layers of texture and a subtle sweetness that dances on the palate. Beyond burgers, the menu impresses with standout dishes like the crispy Fish and Chips, the creamy Steak Tartare, and the tender, flavor-packed Pork Belly Sandwich. Small plates such as Sauerkraut Balls and Just Pierogies are perfect for sharing, bursting with homestyle comfort and local flair.
The dessert selection continues the indulgence, featuring treats like the velvety Chocolate Truffle Cake and the intriguingly tangy Just Vinegar Pie. Whether savoring the rich S’more Cake after dinner or enjoying a refreshing Jamaican Ginger Beer from their thoughtfully curated soda-pop line, guests are in for a treat at every turn.
Butterjoint’s atmosphere is warm and approachable, with many diners noting the welcoming, cozy vibe that makes every visit feel like a special occasion. Outdoor seating pairs perfectly with Pittsburgh’s pleasant evenings, while the attentive, if sometimes slightly uneven, service adds a human touch to the dining experience without detracting from the overall pleasure.
Visitors consistently rave about the quality and consistency of the food. One loyal guest, Finn, praised it as possibly “the best ‘thick’ burger I’ve had in my entire life,” highlighting the superb bun made by the bakery next door and the perfectly charred yet juicy beef. Others laud the impeccable fries—golden, crisp, and never greasy—and commend the kitchen for delivering rich, comforting dishes like French Onion Soup and perfectly seasoned pierogies.
In short, Butterjoint stands out as a must-visit destination for those seeking expertly executed American fare with carefully considered flavors and a touch of culinary creativity. Whether you’re craving a juicy burger, a standout sandwich, or a comforting plate of local favorites, Butterjoint invites you to savor every bite in a welcoming atmosphere that feels unmistakably Pittsburgh.
Been here a few times and the food is always on point. I haven't had anything less than great, but everything under the sandwich menu category is particularly outstanding. During our last visit, there were a few fries that were hard and tasted stale, but not a huge deal. Service has been generally okay, however there have been a few times where our server forgot to check in on us or forgot to put in our order. Most of the appetizers are good, but the small portion sizes make them not worth the cost, personally. The cocktails are expensive but strong and very tasty. Overall, the sandwiches, especially the Jamaican Pulled Goat, are good enough to keep me coming back.
The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. The service was friendly and the right amount of attentive while allowing us to enjoy our meal. The fancy chicken sandwich was a fantastic mix of flavors. The chicken was juicy and tender. My spouse had the Jamaican pulled goat sandwich, which was messy and flavorful. I look forward to another visit!
A girlfriend and I stopped here before attending the author series featuring Elizabeth Gilbert a short walk to the Carnegie. Sat outside and enjoyed the lovely evening. The food was fantastic. She had moules frites and I tried the shredded goat. All delicious. Our server sweet adorable and efficient. A great night out in Oakland!!
Butterjoint is a restaurant that deserves my highest recommendations . I do not say this lightly but it may have been the best “thick” burger I’ve had in my entire life. The burger was extraordinarily juicy, yet still charred and crisp on the outside . The quality of meat was stupendous , and the bun was made in the bakery next door. The pierogies were certainly “Pittsburgh style”, but done exceptionally well. For dessert we had vinegar pie, which while sounding odd, was the best pie I’ve had in my life . It was a sweet tangy pie with a crystallized custard filling served with homemade ice cream. All of the dishes were recommended by our waiter, Brennan, who was a kind young man . He welcomed us to the restaurant and embraced Pittsburgh’s culture with his recommendations. I cannot put into words how much I love this restaurant. 6, maybe 7 out of 5 stars
We went to celebrate a birthday and were very impressed. The staff in the bar area was super friendly and accommodating. It was some of the best food I've had in a long time. The French onion soup was cheesy and delicious. The pierogies were phenomenal. The burger was well season and the sauce was tasty. The fries were the star of the show. They aren't greasy at all, and were fried to perfection. I would say that the bar can get a bit loud and the tables are pretty close to each other, so ask for the dining room if you want a more intimate setting (but youd miss out on the happy hour drinks and apps)
This place blew me away! I am not a local and was searching for some good food while in town. I would have expected a much higher bill based on the quality and quantity of food I was served. Every dish tasted top of the line with excellent attention paid to each ingredient, many of which are local. Many items are made in house. Best garlic aioli I have ever had and some great fries to go with it. Servers are lovely and the decor is fun. If you are looking for a “fine dining” atmosphere, you may not be completely satisfied, as this is not a white tablecloths place. (I don’t mind this but thought I would point it out.) In my opinion it is a great balance of down-to-earth and elevated. 100% a perfect date spot. There is a cozy looking bar inside on the right, and people throughout both the restaurant and bar seemed to be having a great time. I imagine that this place has many repeat patrons. I went early and the dining room was very quiet and mostly empty, but by the time I left it was really filling up and lots of lively chatter. My only real complaint is that it is so dimly lit inside that it was a little hard to see the menu and the wonderful food. Try the vinegar pie.
Great spot in our neighborhood for outdoor bistro style dining. Hearty Salad with Crab Cakes provides a light summertime meal. So good I came back two nights in a row. The 2nd night my husband ordered the French Onion soup and loved it.
Beautifully decorated, whimsical wallpaper, fantastic service and delicious food! They had a bartender's choice drink where you don't know what you're getting! My wife particularly loved the peppered shrimp appetizer. The rolls were amazing as was the goat cheese crustini. Malcolm, our waiter, mentioned they are known for the pierogis and the burger. Both were fantastic. The desserts were unique and made on premise: a flan with pecan brittle; and a vinegar pie - described as an apple pie without the apples that tastes like a key lime pie! So great!
